The Basics of Roullete

Roullete (roult, roule-t) is the game of chance in which players place bets on numbers and color combinations that will appear on a spinning wheel. The number of winning bets depends on the odds of those numbers and colors appearing on the wheel. The game is a fast-paced and fun way to gamble in casinos and many people love it because of the excitement, glamour, and mystery that surrounds it. The rules are simple enough for novices to understand but offer a surprising level of depth for serious bettors.

Roulette is played on a table with a betting mat and a rotating wheel with pockets that are numbered from 1 to 36 in alternating red and black. There is also an extra green division numbered 0. On American tables, there is a second extra green division marked 00. This addition makes the American version of the game a worse proposition financially than the European one.

Traditionally, a player places a bet by laying down chips on the betting mat. The precise placement of the chips indicates the type of bet that is being placed. All bets are placed prior to the croupier spinning the wheel and rolling a ball into one of its pockets. The croupier then removes the losing bets from the table and pays out winning bets according to the payout table. The game continues with another round of betting and spinning the wheel.

There are a number of different bet types in Roulette, from straight-up to corner and dozens. Each bet type has its own odds and payouts. The second of these symmetries is that there are no numbers between 24 and 33 on the wheel (the second and third dozen).

Although there are a variety of systems for playing Roulette, none of them can convert a subfair game into a profitable enterprise. However, some professional gamblers were able to achieve an edge in the 1930s by using prediction techniques. These included seeking out rigged wheels, which were not difficult to find in poorly run casinos. This was possible because of the sloppy maintenance and technique of some wheels, and because the wheels could be designed to favor certain numbers and colors. The only surefire way to prevent this would be for casinos to ban all bets before the wheel is spun.
